The items on this list are not strict rules, but rather friendly recommendations. The recommendations are catered toward headshots for performance and business portfolios. You can adjust these to fit your session's purpose and your own style. Ultimately, you are the one to decide how you want to be presented in your images.
OutfitsAvoid all-white and light colored tops (pink, pale yellow, light green, sky blue, etc.) as they can wash you out and cause significant loss of depth and detail. If you want to wear an outfit with lighter color, layer it with another outfit of darker color. Avoid shiny and bright neon colors. Avoid outfits with polka dots, stripes, plaid, or any type of busy pattern. Avoid logos or graphics on your outfit unless it is the purpose of your session. Make sure your outfits are clean and properly pressed and ironed.
HairConsider not washing your hair if you’ve washed it the day before since clean hair can be harder to work with. Keep your hair simple and choose a style that has worked for you before.
MakeupGenerally speaking, classic makeup is the safest bet. Avoid dramatic colors. Skip sparkly and shimmery products, such as very shiny lip gloss. Do apply translucent powder to eliminate shine if you notice it. Make sure your lips are not chapped. Bring your makeup and powder to your session for any touchups.
Accessories and JewelryAvoid wearing too much jewelry as they can distract. You should also avoid hats, scarves, chains, and other accessories. As for eyeglasses, make sure the lens and frame are clean.
Hair Ties and ScrunchiesIf you use hair ties and scrunchies to tie up your hair, avoid putting those hair ties and scrunchies on your wrist for at least 24 hours before your session. This is so that you do not have any indentations on your wrist in your images.
Tan LinesIf you have tan lines from watch and outfits and do not want them in your images, cover them up with similar watch or outfits or makeup.
One to Two Days Before Your SessionGet plenty of sleep each night and stay hydrated.
